Betzavta Workshop: Higher Education as in Democracy Education

From 24 to 26 February 2026, TU Berlin will host a Betzavta workshop themed ‘Educating for democracy across all academic disciplines’ with Dr. Uki Maroshek of the Adam Institute for Democracy and Peace which is a jewish-arabic educational institute based in Jerusalem, and Dr.-Ing. André Baier of TU Berlin.

This workshop addresses a simple but far-reaching question: How can lecturers of any academic discipline make their everyday teaching more democratic by changing the way people meet, learn, decide, cooperate and disagree in higher education?

It is primarily designed for lecturers, tutors and colleagues working in higher-education didactics. A small number of spots are also reserved for people who are active in educational work outside the university. The number of participants is limited to 20. Participation is free of charge.

Betzavta is the Hebrew word for ‘together’ and is also the name of a democracy education method developed at the Adam Institute for Democracy and Peace. Participants make self-determined decisions in a variety of individual, small and large group activities. They then reflect collectively on their different motivations and work out the democratic principles that shaped the process and the outcome. In this way, participants not only experience dilemmas through their actions, but also learn to work through these dilemmas together. This experience-based approach to learning democracy is the core of Betzavta.
